White Rock Reflection

This home was designed for a young, hardworking family with four children. They envision a welcoming mountain retreat — a place to gather during school vacations, ski from their doorstep in winter, and explore miles of hiking and biking trails in warmer months. Their days will be filled with adventure and their evenings spent cooking together, sharing stories, and relaxing in warm, inviting living spaces.

The site’s dramatic views and natural slope shaped the home’s design. With a ten-foot elevation change, the residence nestles naturally into the hillside. A striking see-through entry immediately frames the landscape, guiding visitors into the upper-level living spaces where White Rock Mountain anchors the northern view and ridgelines stretch east and west. This mountain profile is echoed in the architecture through primary and secondary gables connected by perpendicular ridgelines. Transparent circulation spaces link daylit building elements along the north side.

Traditional gable roofs pair with broad expanses of glass to capture sweeping panoramas. Stacked windows at each end of the main living area frame White Rock to the north and Mount Crested Butte to the south, offering unbroken views from sage meadow up through forested slopes to colorful rock faces and rugged peaks.

A stone base grounds the home, while the timber structure draws the eye upward and adds rhythm to the open living areas. Deep eaves provide shadow, depth, and protection from heavy snow. Flagstone patios nestle into the stone walls, blending seamlessly with the landscape. The absence of decks and railings maintain clean, open sightlines from both the north and south windows.

The garage is tucked discreetly out of view, revealing itself only beyond the entry parking area. Inside, a generous mudroom supports this active family with ample space to gear up for activities. Each bedroom is ensuite, designed to comfortably welcome family and friends for generations to come.
